OPTIMARE is a leading provider of systems and sensors for airborne maritime surveillance.

OPTIMARE offers its fully integrated network-based airborne maritime surveillance system MEDUSA as well as a unique range of remote sensors for airborne oil spill surveillance.

Together with its parent company Aerodata AG it provides complete turn-key surveillance solutions, including the unique belly-mounted OctoPod supporting more than 20 different mission tasks.

Products and services

MEDUSA - Advanced Data Acquisition and Processing for Airborne Maritime Surveillance. The System allows robust acquisition, real-time display as well as immediate post-overflight processing of remote sensing data.

OPTIMARE SLAR - Wide-swath radar imaging for airborne maritime observation.

Infrared/Ultraviolet Line Scanner - IR/UV have been established as standard tools in airborne oil spill remote sensing.

Visible Line Scanner - VIS have been established as auxiliary tools for various airborne remote sensing applications. It is a ruggedized, lightweight remote sensor for earth observation at visible wavelengths.

MWR-P - Ultra-compact imaging airborne microwave radiometer for day & night oil spill analysis.

LFS-P - Ultra-compact airborne laser fluorosensor for day & night oil spill classification.



The OPTIMARE SLAR is a cloud-penetrating imaging X-band radar for day & night airborne maritime observation. Assuming sufficient aircraft altitude the OPTIMARE SLAR can have a swath width of more than 120 kilometers. The sensor is used for mapping the sea surface with regard to oil spills, vessels, wakes and many more.



Laser fluorosensors are the only airborne instruments for a day & night remote classification of crude oil, petroleum products and fluorescing chemicals spilled at sea. The airborne identification of the type of marine pollution can support both the coordination of response actions and the prosecution of polluters.



Imaging multi-frequency microwave radiometers such as the MWR-P are the only remote sensors for day & night measurement of oil spill thickness and
volume. Like its predecessor the MWR-P is specifically designed to support emergency response actions. The sensor is invaluable in terms of oil spill response as the most critical areas of an oil spill are mapped, localized and quantified.
